Our center for Emergence Studies his publishing an article about Senexism. We define senexism as the autopoetic impact of the increasing proportion of physically older people. There will soon be a million people over 100 years old on the planet.
In this research we try and identify impacts of senexism both on the social systems and the physical systems we are part of.
One area we will study is the growing proportion of middle aged students on our UTDallas university campus. Examples are i) middle aged women who come back to university after raising their families ii) Middle aged men in boring jobs who come back to do PhD research ‘on the side’.
My physical trainer also said he seemed to have more middle aged clients at the gym; but he wasn’t sure if this was their choice or his choice in selecting clients.
We think senexism is going to disrupt many professions that may need to be done differently. You should not teach middle aged, experiences, students the same way you teach 20 year olds. Same for physical therapy, but that professional already trainers to train each person differently.
Finally we think Edward Said/s argument about the ‘late style’ is relevant. As humans age their motivations evolve. I am planning to retire in a few years so I no longer publish in ways that help me get a better job. How will senexism affect the publishing industries.
However the internet has provoked easy transgenerational collaborations which could a trigger for a kind of Rennaissance, or Re-Renaissance or maybe De_Rennaissance. Debirth not rebirth.
We will research the research on this and connected topics, but also as we draw conclusions we will try to apply them to practice in daily life. Contact me at rxm116130@utdallas.edu to join the group.
